How It Works

What is OP_RETURN?

OP_RETURN is a Bitcoin opcode that lets you store up to 80 bytes of arbitrary data directly on the blockchain. Once written, your note is replicated across every Bitcoin full node on earth and stored permanently.

How does payment work?

You pay by credit or debit card using Stripe's embedded checkout. We handle the Bitcoin transaction on your behalf.

Pricing is simple: $5.00 for any note up to 80 bytes. For longer messages, it's $5.00 for the first chunk plus $2.00 per additional transaction — so a 3-chunk message costs $9.00, and the maximum 24-chunk message costs $51.00.

What if my message is longer than 80 bytes?

Each OP_RETURN transaction can hold up to 80 bytes of data. For longer messages, The Forever Note automatically splits your text into chunks and writes each one as a separate Bitcoin transaction — up to 1,680 bytes (24 transactions) in total.

Every chunk is stamped with a unique Document ID that links them all together. Once all transactions are confirmed on the blockchain, the full message can be reassembled in order using the Document ID — which is included in your receipt email and can be looked up on the search page at any time.

What can it be used for?

The possibilities are endless — here are a few ideas:

  • Birthday or anniversary messages
  • Love notes
  • Commemorating a wedding or birth
  • Memorializing a loved one
  • Marking a significant life event
  • Sending a message to the future
  • Publishing the U.S. Constitution
  • Inscribing information that cannot be censored
  • Uncensorable and verifiable messages
